Combining physical toys or game elements with a videogame to enhance the user experience is very challenging. But the chances for success in this new market are great. "The Skylanders franchise became the first kids’ videogame IP to cross the $1 billion mark in just 15 months, and I think we are still just starting to realize its potential,” said Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision Publishing. “… bringing your toys to life in a video game could change both the video game and the toy industries, and more importantly, change the way kids play." Ravensburger is Europe’s leading publisher for puzzles and games. Ravensburger Digital announced its move into the market of hybrid games one year ago: Making video games for mobile devices, which enhance the gameplay by real physical product. This year in January Ravensburger Digital presented their first hybrid game “Microminds” at the world’s largest toy and games fair Spielwarenmesse Nürnberg. A game developed with one of the most experienced German studios: Black Forest Games. This session will be for developers, regardless of their team size. The presentation will dig into details of product management, production and game design. What difficulties arise combining the physical and the digital game world? What is cool about the possibilities? Participants can take away a solid understanding of the production of hybrid games and what to care about when pitching hybrid game ideas to publishers.
