University of Applied Sciences HTW Berlin, Creative Media Group

HTW is a State University of Applied Sciences in the South-East of Berlin. Universities of Applied Sciences in Germany are usually focused on teaching and studies while being less research-oriented. The HTW is different in this respect since it emphasizes research, too. It is Berlin ́s most research-oriented University of Applied Sciences and also one of the best universities of this kind in Germany. Together with five other Universities of Applied Sciences it forms the cluster of excellence “HAWtech” and is continuously extending its research capabilities. In 2007 the GamesLab was founded – being one of the first research center of its kind in Germany. In 2010, the GamesLab research institute was honoured as a “place for innovation” by the President of Germany within the initiative “Deutschland – Land der Ideen” (Germany – Country of Ideas). The HTW houses the institute FKI – Forschungs- und Weiterbildungszentrum “Kultur & Informatik” (Research and Training Centre for Culture and Computing) with about 25 research assistants. Under the umbrella of the FKI the application center “creative Applied Interactive Technologies (cAPITs)” focuses on the knowledge and technology transfer between gaming and other industries. The APITs application center partners with 20+ enterprises, the German Trade Association of Interactive Entertainment Software (BIU) and Berlin’s business and technology development agency Berlin Partner. A major part of the FKI and leading the APITs center is the research and development group “Creative Media” headed by Prof. Carsten Busch, in which about 10 scientific assistants research and develop inter alia applications for Digital Game-based Learning, Gamification and APITs.
