Claas Oehler studied musicology and law in Berlin (Humboldt University) followed by postgraduate judicial traineeship; admitted to the bar in 2002; research fellow at the Viadrina European University (Commercial & Corporate Law) and phD studies, partner at the Berlin office of a regional law partnership since 2002; merged with Ihde & Partner Rechtsanwälte in 2006.
Claas Oehler was an initiator, legal adviser and a managing director to the Federal Association of the Computer Games Industries (G.A.M.E.) for 10 years. He also has been managing as an interim CEO the German age rating organization for video games (USK) for two years. Claas has a seat in the advisory board for creative industries of the Berlin Chamber of Commerce. He has also been chair speaker of the Consumer Protection and Privacy Law Expert Group of the “Dialog Internet” of the Federal Ministry of Family, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth (German: BMFSFJ) that evaluates the necessity for upcoming regulations. Claas has been elected to and holds a seat in the Copyright Expert Committee of the German Culture Council. Claas invests in several Startups as a “business angel” and supports companies with his network.
He publishes articles in specialist journals, collaborates on scientific publications and books, and holds lectures. For example he is an author/co-author of Germany’s first handbook on computer and video. Claas has also contributed a chapter in a well-known handbook on copyright law and writes articles for game developers in various magazines, like the “making games” magazine.
As a lawyer, Claas Oehler has been ranked for the 5th year now as one of Germany`s top five lawyers in the field of Entertainment Law for Games Law (JUVE 2009 - 2014). He is evaluated by his competing peers as “excellent strategist” (JUVE 2011), an “excellent lawyer” who has a “deep knowledge of the entertainment and games industry”. (JUVE 2010; Kanzleien in Deutschland, 2010). He is also recommended by other major law firm guides, such as Best Lawyer, Kanzleien in Deutschland etc.
